Aircraft in the rain
August 4th, 2006 | by Dusk |

I was on my way back from the airport today and the weather seems fine at first. This stretch of road, from KLIA to Subang, is full of billboards. It looked awful because there is so many advertising going on at both left and right side of the road. Who is gonna look at them all?

Then out nowhere it begin to rain heavily. Everyone slowed down to 80kmph. It is almost impossible to see if we were any faster because the rain was falling at the rate faster than the wiper can handle. So any of u ever wondered what does it feel like under heavy rain in the air?
Well plane are suppose to avoid heavy rain or bad weather anyway, but even during the light rain its almost impossible to see the runway behind the walls of rain. Below is a picture taken at my flying academy during those days in MFA during navigation. It is a Piper Warrior with a single engine mounted infront of the nose.

As u can see rain is very visible. Its like a wall of dark lines with some cotton like fluffy thing coming out of the bottom. That’s the dense from the center of the rain blowing outwards.
You don’t want to be inside that thing because sometimes the cumulonimbus cloud can give a sudden downdraft called microburst which might push u down violently to the ground. This freak condition will happen because the cloud will release a mass of air downwards. Sometimes u will hit the edge where it will push u upwards, then pilots will try to pitch the nose down, then the plane might go into the downdraft path of the wind, blowing the plane down.
Another reason why pilots avoid going near big clouds is because of the turbulence which can be really annoying. It can bring the plane up/down 200ft at a time. Like a rollercoaster gone wrong. People can be thrown out of their sits and stuff.
Is it possible to land in a raining condition? Do planes have wiper?
The answer is yes and yes. If the rain is moderate and the pilots think its safe to attempt landing, then its ok. The plane’s anti-skid must be operational too. They will maybe use ILS to guide them down until they have visual with the runway. If there is no visual by the MDA (minimum decent altitude), they will commence a go-around and attempt another approach or just do a hold until the weather moves. Heavy rain usually lasts for 1 or 2 hours. If for some reason they thing the rain will last longer and there is not enough fuel for the plane, they will land at another airport.

Here is a picture of a b727’s wiper.

Haha. I choose this pic because of the bird.

At first glance I thought it was someone’s hand! Too funny. Thank goodness it was a bird.

Airport can’t have bird if i am not mistake right?
And if there is rain in front of the line i am using, I just simply change the line, or need to re-do the flying plan? We will be inform if there is a rain on the way we are using?

There sholdnt be. But birds dont follow restriction. Haha. Anyway, if theres rain in ur path and the weather radar shows severe terbulance, you should avoid it. If its a very light rain and you think there shouldnt be any problem, then you can fly through it.
Before any flight, you have to check the the the weather using either METAR, TAF, Volmat or even by by calling your destination’s control tower. A metar would look like:
METAR WMKK 200900Z 091019 20009KT 9999 FEW050 TEMPO 1416 24035G55KT 210V270 1700 +SHRA BKN007 OVC015CB=
Kuala Lumpur weather taken at [wmkk] 20th 9:00am UTC [200900]
At 10:00 UTC until 19:00 utc [1019], the wind is blowing fron 200 and 09 knots. Visibility is more than 10km [9999] there is few clouds at 5000ft but from 14:00 UTC to 16:00 UTC [TEMPO 1416] it is going to be a windy day with gusty [g] 35 kt wind up to 55kts at times and veering [v] from 210 to 270 degrees. Visibility is reduced to 1700 metres in heavy [+] rain showers [shra] and a low broken [bkn] cloud of 700 feet and the sky will be full of Cumulonimbus at 1500 ft [overcast, ovc015CB].
Yes, you will have top check it everytime before u fly.

Yes of course it’s possible, most aircraft are fitted with ILS (Instruement Landing System)which guides the pilots down with a glideslope needle and align needle, there’s also Autoland, which is done entirely by computer, the only input from the pilots is the setting of the correct frequences. Most aircraft also have wiper blades, these can used on the ground aswell as in the air, but not over 180KIAS (Knots Indicated Airspeed) but you won’t really need them because the wind takes it off. Hope this helps!
